Below is a video (the original length is 14 minutes and 20 seconds) that i shot back on the 18th of July in 2004 where I drove around Sydney for around one hour and then speed it up so it only took 14 minutes...i called it CarCam v1.0 :)
Interesting to see how the 90 second thing works out...seems a bit short to me.
I get the feeling i have done this before...but here goes...to explain what ExpeditionOz is all about, here is part of first blog post of the re-birthed site on the 13th of December 2007.
"Welcome to www.ExpeditionOz.com - where the journey is more important than the destination…usually.V2 of this site (i tried this about 4 years ago) will initially collect my personal stories and photos from my various travels, or expeditions as I like to think of them, as well as providing a place to find links and information to some of the interesting places, people and equipment that seem to emanate from the outdoor travel, adventure sport and expedition community, particularly from Australia.
If you hang around long enough, and if i don’t get side tracked (like i did before) or dissappear for months-on-end in the big blue room (the great outdoors), i’ll also get around to setting up a few more things on the site that you might find useful."
Though i have gotten side tracked for small periods of time, i have managed to keep the blog posts rolling and also got a few "other things" set-up on the site since the re-launch, such as the ExpeditionOz Photo Library and the ExpeditionOz Video Library :)
While I'm definately interested in playing about with the video stuff (using my cool and tiny Oregon Scientific Action Cam initially), i will also (more than likely) start doing some podcasts as well (using my also very cool Zoom H4 Handy Recorder)...at least until i decide to go out and buy a funcky hi-def wide screen video camera ;)
I'm sure the FCC isn't too happy with this thing...but i'm sure pirate radio superstar, Hard Harry (played by Christian Slater), from the brilliant 1990's movie "Pump up the Volume" (which is in my top 10 list of movies) would have loved one of these things...and i'm sure he would have worked out a way to increase its range from 100m ;)
You can't tell me that this movie, which came out in 1990, didn't in some way or another influence the worlds first podcasters...seriously, buy the DVD and watch it to get a feel for why podcasting has attracted a lot of enthusiastic content creators.
"Pump up the Volume" never really crossed my mind when I first started podcasting (in July of 2004) and co-founded Gday World (Nov 2004) and TPN (Jan 2005), but in hind-site i think it played an important part of the process :)
You gotta love the podcast bit :)
I'm looking forward to seeing what Robert has been up to and where this goes :)
"...we need to build the ultimate mash-up, a truly Live application that leverages aspects of both the Windows OS and the web, with an engine powered by RSS. Through RSS, we can empower our clients to consume not just the feeds that we provide – but also the ability to mix in those of third party vendors as well as their own internal corporate blogs and best practices."
It sounds like a big bundle of RSS goodness :)
It's downloading at the moment so I will get to have a play with it in the morning but I am certainly looking forward to seeing what he has put together.
Remember when Mike Hall said Robert Scoble said "Podcasts are only for mp3 files and iPods"???
;)
Nice one guys :)
Last weekend we launched our first real content property (a redesign of an already existing site) and i am waiting till we iron out all of the bugs before i announce it here...it should only be a few days away.
If you hunt around using the various tools on the web it shouldn't take you to long to find a reference that links a few new content sites to me in one way or another ;)
Dropping a bit extra into the logo is easy..but telling you a bit more about the project...well...let me give it a go without giving to much away yet...apologies for the length and possible rambling to follow :)
Digital media distribution and consumption is the future...I think we all agree with that...but as I have stated before, both on this blog and at conferences I have spoken at in the past, especially at the 2005 ACMA Broadcasting Conference in Canberra where I did the whole "we walk like a duck and quack like a duck so we must be a duck...just a new sort of duck" spiel about TPN to the old media world attendees...the old world media is not about to die any time soon...its just going to morph dramatically over time as new content creation and distribution technologies, like blogs, podcasts and vlogs take hold and the long tail plays itself out to to its fullest.
Taking about the long tail, I am part way through reading Chris Andersons recently published book of the same name, and his logic that the old world of "hits" is dead is pretty sort of true, but I think it still has a while to play out until it dies completely. On second thought, I actually put "hits" in the same bucket as old media...they won't die completely...but the way that the old "hit making factory" works will continue to morph and change dramatically because of the long tail and other developments. I believe that "hits" will still hold a place in our world because that is just human nature. The office water cooler might be replaced by blogs and online communities, but it still creates the same outcome...people talk about stuff they have heard, watched or read and recommend it to other people...those people check it out and if they like it they recommend it to other people and pretty soon you a have a hit...or at least something with a large and entrenched audience. In all honesty, I think that the long tail, while being hugely important and the biggest and important part of the chain, will also become one of the filters for the hit factory.
Stars and hits will continue to rise and shine from the old world distribution channels of TV ,film, music and print but stars and hits will also rise from the new digital channel. I think what we will start to see is a "cross-over effect" start to occur more and more often. The stars and hits from the old world channels are appearing in the new world channels by starting websites, blogs, podcasts, etc. and this will start to be true in reverse.
The best, and most known of the bloggers will, and have already, started to appear in traditional paper print by writing books and being asked to write columns for magazines and newspapers. The best podcasts and podcasters will, and are already, being lured to do work for radio. Musicians who stick songs on myspace and into podcasts are being wined and dined by the record labels. How long will it be before the best vloggers start to have their material shown via terrestrial and digital broadcasters into TV land or a hit movie comes from two pro-ams with a HD video camera???
Both the old world media and the new world media companies and economy have many things in common, but none more so than the fact that they are all about getting media/content into the hands of the public that want to access it. The other thing they have in common is that both old and new media need to make money to cover production and distribution costs. You can make a podcast pretty cheaply, but you still need a computer, a microphone and a server (or part of one) to store either the file or the blog/RSS feed on. OK...so a radio station needs a lot more money for its studio/equipment, a license for some spectrum, a freakin' huge antenna and various other costs for overheads like staff to do the same thing, but either way it costs money.
The "cross-over effect" works both ways by making it easier and cheaper for the old world media guys to get to the new world audience and for the new world media guys to get the cash and exposure they need to continue doing what they are doing and to possibly reach a different, yet still important audience.
I believe that the "cross-over effect" (you should be getting the feeling that I like that term by now) will become larger and larger because of things like blogs, podcasts and vlogs that make enough money from things like Google Ads to ensure that the content creator can do it for a living and not just out of love (or ego). Add to this things like digital print, digital radio, digital TV, mobile TV, IPTV and the other emerging digital distribution channels, and its going to be so much easier for the best-of -the-best of the new world to get out in front of an old world media audience that isn't quite ready yet for the major and disruptive technological changes that are happening around them.
So what has this to do with my future...well...you will just have to wait a bit longer for the answer to that one but lets just say that the "cross-over effect" will play a part in what we are doing.
Oh yeah...since everyone else seems to making graphs to represent some sort of effect lately I hope my little picture of "The Cross-Over Effect" makes sense ;)
Hopefully its products and brands will be something that you will all be able to enjoy and will use everyday. It's launch products are just the start of a wide and varied selection that will very quickly grow...we have pretty big plans for the future and more importantly we have the talent, the resources. the relationships and the commitment to make those plans real.
Stay tuned for more info over the next week :)

(via Engadget)
"the show with zefrank" daily video show is brilliant....todays show where he rants on about Delta AIrlines is a crack up...his "if the earth were a sandwich" idea is great and the its use of Google maps is really well done yet its such a simple idea...
This is definately on my daily watch list from now on :)
LiveSide also picked up on this product which looks like it will be called "Windows Live Video" a while ago. It looks like Microsoft is stepping up to the consumer content plate ina big way with Spaces, Warhol, Vista's Movie Maker, Monaco (an audio creation app) and Vista's Photo Gallery / Max (photo sharing).
I wonder whats next???
This two day conference has some great speakers lined up and here is the description of the event in the words of John Butterworth, the CEO of AIMIA...
"The Australian Interactive Media Industry Association (AIMIA) invites you to participate in this inaugural forum that will challenge and discuss the change from traditional to interactive television technology. The growth of interactive television services will continue to rise as consumer choice and viewing patterns evolve and change with new technologies. The Future of TV Forum will engage industry representatives and provide the platform for discussion on the future of Australia’s television industry."
It has senior individuals from ACMA, ITV, Foxtel, NineMSN, IDC Australia, Frost & Sullivan, Network Ten, Sky News Australia, Hyro, Yahoo! 7, HWW Limited, Southern Star Entertainment, Sony BMG, The Bridge Networks, Open TV, ISAN International, Free TV Australia, ABC TV, SBS, NSW Government, Principius and IconMobile.
Yep...that's right...the representative from Principus will be none other than yours truly and i'll be speaking towards the end of day 2. And my topic of choice??? "User generated TV - The rise of video blogs".
I'll be keeping my 50 minutes pretty focussed and will cover things like:
I hope to see you there :)
If you are a PR professional and want to attend, its on in Melbourne between 9am and 12.20pm on Friday the 9th of June at The Windsor Hotel, 103 Spring St, Melbourne. It's also on in Sydney (June 7), Canberra (July 24), Brisbane (July 26), Adelaide (August 15) and Perth (August 18)...except you will only get me on a panel in Melbourne...though you will get to see and hear Trevor Cook if you go to the Sydney seminar :)
That got me thinking...I blog on and off about blogs, podcasts and moblogs and I am constantly asked to speak at conferences in Australia about these and other emerging technologies (as you would if you were known as a emerging technology evangelist), so i just ran a search on Google on the words Australian blog, Australian podcast and Australian moblog to see where i rank...the results for those searchs on the 26th of May 2006 are below...
Australian blog - 5th spot (image) global & 3rd spot (image) in Australia.
Australian podcast - 7th spot (image) global & 4th spot (image) in Australia.
Australian moblog - 5th spot (image) global & 3rd spot (image) in Australia.
Now you know why i get invited to speak and present at conferences, why i get interviewed by a lot of journalists (two or three articles coming out next month on a variety of topics), why people pay me to consult on emerging technology and why my next little bunch of projects is bound to stir up some interest...when i get around to annoucing them that is ;)
While i'm doing a bit of shameless self-promotion...heres one other thing...with my diverse background in the new media sector, my knoweldge of emerging technologies, my industry contacts both in Australia and overseas and my profile from conferences, stories in the media, and my blog, it probably all adds up to being a good reason for voting for me in the upcoming AIMIA National Executive elections which are on soon ;)
Put together to talk about the Digital Content Industry Action Agenda (DCIAA), the forum sounds like a great location to talk about the future of our industry and to learn about what a group instigated by the Australian Federal Government thinks about it as well.
"Launched in February 2004, the Digital Content Industry Action Agenda ( DCIAA ) is an industry-led and Government-supported initiative. Its purpose is to ensure that the digital content industry in Australia reaches its full potential and stays competitive in the global economy."
Make sure that you go and grab a copy of the report to get a heads up on what they are talking about. At 87 pages long its a big read, but hats to off the DCIAA group and to the team that worked on it, because it is a amazing document that is truly insightful.
And i'll remind you again...if you own a company or you presonally work in the Interactive Media space, go and become a member of AIMIA. Having them involved in this sort of initiative makes the membership fees a small pitance for what they are doing currently and for what they can achieve for our industry in the future.
Declan Elliot mentions myself, along with a few other key individuals (Adam, Ron and Cam), as having had the old pioneering spirit when we decided to enter the nascent podcasting space back in what feels like an eternity ago for me now when Cam and I launched the first Australian podcast, "G'day World" and then the world’s first commercial podcast network - "The Podcast Network"
Thanks Declan...hopefully people will think that my next project will be just as pioneering...and that just as many of them will want to tag along for the ride :)
Podworkx is a provider of Corporate Podcasting Services and they are doing some great things in the podcasting space in Australia. If you are working for an organisation that needs some help podcasting, not only with the technical side but also with the strategic side of it as well, check out the Podworkx site at www.podworx.com and give Nick a call...oh yeah...he's a top bloke as well :)
A few days ago I officially ended my relationship with The Podcast Network and I am no longer a director, a shareholder, an employee or a show host.
I don’t want to bore you all, but as TPN and this part of my podcasting career took up a large part of my recent life, I want to give you all some background on what The Podcast Network was and the direction I plan on heading in now that I have left it.
As you may or may not know, The Podcast Network was not only Australia's, but the world’s first commercial podcast network. It was launched by Cameron Reilly and myself on the 14th of February 2005, which was just over two months after we had started our first podcast, G'day World, on the 29th of November 2004. We were early adopters and first movers (hey...we launched before Podcast Alley opened its doors) and it felt good.
I was on the verge of quitting my job of nearly five years as the Executive Producer, and then the head of Singleton OgilvyInteractive (one of Australia's largest interactive agencies) and the idea of launching a media network was the last thing from my mind. Initially I had planned on starting an emerging technology consultancy company, called Principius, which was to provide a variety of services to the marketing and communications industries around the areas of emerging technology. But the amazing growth and interest in both G'day World and The Podcast Network from around the world meant that Principius got sidelined. I then entered a world where I spent between 12-14 hours a day creating podcasts, designing and building a "large quantity" of blog sites, maintaining servers in Australia and then the US and also looking after the marketing side and acquiring / educating advertisers and sponsors...all of which I enjoyed at the time.
One of the bonuses of starting a media network with my background, both as an "ad executive" and as a reasonably well known blogger (in certain tech and marketing circles), was that the media and the conference circuit opened up to me for the first time in years (at the time Singleton Ogilvy & Mather didn't really believe in letting staff attend or speak at conferences or to the press), and I got to appear in a lot of both real world media (Channel 9 (Australia TV network), the BBC, The Bulletin, etc) and online media sites (Microsoft’s Channel 9, Market Watch (1, 2, 3) , Excalibur, The Blog Herald, Blogosphere Radio, The Chris Pirillo Show, etc) around the world as well as being invited to speak at quite a few conferences and events in Australia like Breakfast Bytes, Blogtalk Downunder, The 2005 Digital Advertising Summit, the D>Art.05 Forum, the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) Broadcasting Conference 2005 and the AFR 4th Annual Advertising Summit .
TPN also had some amazing firsts in the world of podcasting, including; launching the worlds first podcast radio drama, Claybourne (which i found in a late night web surfing frenzy), the ability to subscribe and listen to TPN via the Windows Media Center, a major sponsorship deal that i organised with Motorola, a Scottish BAFTA nomination and a distribution deal with an Australian wide WiFi providor to name a few of them. This not only helped to grow the exposure of The Podcast Network but also of myself.
Let’s face it; it was also fun being called one of Australia’s future media moguls and being asked to speak at events like the ACMA conference in Australia and being the only Australian to be invited to attend events like Search Champs v2 in the US by Microsoft. As Rupert can now doubt attest to, the life of a media mogul can be pretty exciting. As a lot of you also know, the life of being a founder and director of a fast growing online venture can also be exciting. Another bunch of you also know that the life of building web sites and maintaining web servers can also be exciting. But doing all three…well…that can be a real pain in the proverbial after a while.
While all this was going on, I also decided that it was time for me to move back to Melbourne after spending 10 years living the high-life in Sydney. My best mate (who I have known since I was 13), was in the process of putting a large IP based CCTV security camera project together for a company in which he is a part owner, Landmark Security, for the 2006 Commonwealth Games (specifically the Athletes Village) that was held in Melbourne and I decided that if he needed my help and time he was going to get it…that’s what good friends are for aren’t they? It was also an incredibly interesting project to work on and as an aside it also allowed me to try and settle back into my home town and to take a short break from TPN, podcasting and blogging and to have a good think about the direction I wanted to continue in.
Well for a variety of reasons I have decided to move on from TPN.
Some of these reasons include the fact that I never really had the time I needed to do "my thing" with Principius (which was the reason I left Singleton OgilvyInteractive in the first place), and also that after having spent over 15 years in the online / interactive / tech business and the marketing world, I felt that I was really just doing the same things that I was doing 10 years ago but putting in twice as much time and effort, and in the end...well...I just wasn’t enjoying it. Finally I am also a strong believer that if you are going to be involved in something, and you can call me old fashioned here; you need to believe in that what you are doing is heading down a path that you believe in 100%. So the decision I came to in the end was that by retaining my role within TPN I was not only holding back TPN but more importantly I was holding back myself from moving forward and growing.
I have to say though, that the time I spent building the idea and the physical entities of both G’day World and TPN, was a great experience. I got to work on an amazing project and along the way got to meet and interview some truly amazing people and I wish all of the past, current and future hosts (a few of which I knew well before TPN had started), all the best with their podcasting and other endeavors in the future.
So what will I be doing now that I have officially left The Podcast Network? That's a pretty big question that has been in my head for a while now. Other than firing up Principius again, during the last few months I have been looking at a number of possible projects (both web and non-web based)…some of the them are straight out of my own head and a few are with some really exciting companies that are working on some really amazing projects. I do know that I will still keep up my blogging, as I seem to have got the bug back again recently, and I may even start up podcasting my own personal show/thoughts as well…which is where TPN started...well...for me it did anyway. I will also be speaking at a few events in the near future, such as the AIMIA Future of TV Forum, the Advertising, Marketing & Media Summit 2006 and the Blogs, Wikis, & RSS event.
I also feel that after spending 15+ years in the internet / new media / digital fields in Australia, it's time that I gave something back to the industry that I love, so I plan to do my bit for our industry body in Australia, AIMIA (the Australian Interactive Media Industry Association), by standing for a seat in the upcoming National Executive election as well as at the Victorian Chapter election.
To all my blog readers and subscribers, and there are a lot more of you than I ever thought there would be when I started SplaTT’s Blog on the 23rd of March 2003, I hope that I can keep you interested enough to keep you reading and/or subscribed to my "collection of random ramblings…"
:)

As most of the articles floating about point out, its only for listening to podcasts and not for producing them...that comes later...
Listen to and watch people like Cory Docotorow, Dan Gillmor, David Weinberger, Doc Searls, Douglas Rushkoff, Howard Rheingold, Joi Ito, Lawrence Lessig, Seth Godin, Tim Berners-Lee and a heap of others.
Come to think of it...we interviewed a few of those people back on the old G'day World at TPN....and it also looks a lot like the names of some of the authors on my bookshelf. Good listening and viewing which ever way you look at it :)
(via Smart Mobs)
Someone emailed Keith and The Girl (Keith and Chemda) a copy of the contract and they spent nearly an entire podcast reading it out and making fun of it.
I have to admit...bits of it do sound pretty lame...
"PodShow Introduces Advertising 2.0 With PodShow Podcast Network Sponsorship Featuring GoDaddy.com"
Umm...yeah...
Congratulations to PodShow and their show hosts on what is no doubt a good deal...but describing this as "Advertising 2.0"???
""We believe we have done something with podcasters that hasn't been done in the history of advertising in any media, a coordinated campaign involving multiple show hosts in multiple genres -- each in their own voice -- simultaneously endorsing one brand while integrating the offer directly into the networks' signup," said Ron Bloom, Co-founder and CEO, PodShow, Inc. "This campaign clearly demonstrates the power of one brand, many voices -- the heart of Advertising 2.0. GoDaddy.com is an ideal sponsor for this initiative; they understand the power of this medium and they are the right brand, with the right message at the right time.""
C'mon Ron and Adam...I think that describing this as "Advertising 2.0" is a bit more than" drinking the Kool Aid"..its more like "smoking the pipe".
Get more info over at Charlie Owen's blog where you can also see some screen shots from Mix06 and grab a copy of the Q Specification along with a video of what Q looks like.
While you are at it, if you are a Windows Media Center fan / developer, make sure you subscribe to the Media Center Sandbox blog by Aaron Stebner and Charlie Owen which is starting to fill up wuith some great info. Nice one guys...
Just ran across this new podcasting plugin for WordPress blogs called PodPress...and it looks pretty feature packed...it even includes a flash player as well.
Well done to John Furrier and his team...i love listening to your PodTech.Net Entrepreneurship Channel shows.
C'mon guys...doesn't the idea of releasing audio and video files via an outlet which is only accessable via a single application sound so much like the old school way of doing things??? At least they only have the nerve to call it podcasting once on the web page. It seems i'm not the only one who thinks its strange either...
Oh yeah...if you want to hear Steve Jobs 2005 Commencement Address that he gave at Stanford, but don't want to fire up iTunes, its been available here for quite a while (since last June to be exact) in Quicktime, Real Audio and Windows Media formats...oops...sorry...its not available in the iPod prefered m4a format...bugger ;)
I always knew it was a good idea to get you involved with TPN right at the start Ewan :)
Here's what i wrote for the TPN site and for SplaTT's Blog when i launched The Podcast Network after spending an all nighter getting it done....one day (if i can find it) i may even post the webcam video that i recorded at 4.40am, on Valentines day in 2005, as i pushed the go-live button :)
A huge thnx to all of you that have been involved in one or another, whether as a host, a guest, a sponsor/advertiser or more importantly...a listener....I'm sure Cam would agree that its been an interesting year and I hope that TPN is still around this time next year to celebrate its second birthday.
:)

Nice to know that someone is listening...i'll be fascinated to know how many people sign this...at the moment...."0"
Hey Cam...we gotta get Molly on the show...if i ever come back. ;)
On the 9th and 10th of November, I had the great honour of being on a panel at this years ACMA (Australian Communications and Media Authority) Broadcasting Conference which was held in the Australian capital, Canberra.
ACMA (a federal authority) was recently formed on 1 July 2005 by the merging of the Australian Communications Authority (ACA) and Australian Broadcasting Authority (ABA) and is responsible for the regulation of broadcasting, radiocommunications, telecommunications and online content in Australia.
To be asked to speak on a three person panel on the topics of podcasting and blogging in front of some of the most senior decision makers in the Australian media sphere from both the government and a number of public and private broadcasting organisations was a great opportunity to spread the word about podcasting and blogging...two of the biggest technologies that are re-shaping the traditional media world.
What surprised me about the whole conference was how many people knew about podcasting (and The Podcast Network) and also how many times in was mentioned in other sessions/panels...it was even mentioned in the opening keynote which was given by the Minister for Communications, Information Technology and the Arts, Senator Helen Coonan.
Over the two day conference I had a constant stream of people who came up to me and wanted to know more about podcasting and TPN...the interest was amazing. A number of people also came up after the panel I was on and congratulated me on TPN and our success in developing one of the worlds best podcasting organisations out of Australia.
The details of the panel i spoke on were as follows:
**************************
Blogging, podcasting and searching are elements of the many-to-many communication revolution. How big is the revolution and what are the effects? Will take audiences and advertising revenues from existing media, or are they expanding the pie? Do bloggers and podcasters change the landscape so much that existing rules (content regulation, ownership limits) no longer make sense? Can the new participants be regulated? If so, should they be regulated?
With Trevor Cook, Director Jackson Wllls Morris, John Battle, Head of Compliance, ITN, Senior Fellow, CMCL, University of Melbourne, and Mick Stanic, Co-founder of The Podcast Network and Technology Evangelist/Digital Solutions Architect at Principius.
The regulation of news and current affairs in a distributed media environment
**************************
The panel ended up being a big discussion between Trevor, John, the audience and myself on primarily podcasting, TPN and the regulatory issues that podcasting and blogging may face in the future. There was a video camera pointed at the stage (and the red couch we sat on) so hopefully i can source the footage and link to it.
I have to thank Trevor Cook for inviting me onto the panel and Michael Gordon-Smith (one of the organisers) for having faith that a little old geek like me could say something that would interest the Australian media and broadcasting elite.
I was a bit worried about how interesting the whole conference was going to be considering it was aimed at the "old media world", but it surprised me how fascinating the two days were...hopefully i will get invited back next year and be able to update them on how the whole "new media world" is going.
But...today, the 11th of November, a day after the event and I am kicking myself on a mimssed opportunity...today is the 30th anniversary of the Whitlam Government dismissal. Before i explain why i am kicking myself...here is a bit of background on the dismissal.
The dismissal was the most dramatic event in the history of the Australian federation. For the first time, an unelected vice-regal representative had removed from office a government which commanded a majority in the House of Representatives.
On Tuesday November 11th, 1975, the Governor-General of Australia, Sir John Kerr, dismissed Mr Gough Whitlam as Prime Minister and appointed Mr Malcolm Fraser as a caretaker Prime Minister.
Having had an interest in the dismissal and being a fan of Gough Whitlam for a long time, i had (and missed) a great opportunity to use a modified version of the famous quote (Real Video version and Real Audio version) that he used on the steps of Parliament House shortly after he was dismissed..."Well may we say god save the Queen...because nothing wil save the Governer-General"
My version would have been something like - "Well may we say god save TV...because nothing will save Radio" ;)
Once again, The Podcast Network comes up with another first (as far as we can tell)... :)
We have just finalised a deal with the leading WiFi provider in Australia, Azure Wireless, to give people an easy and inexpensive way to get access to the whole suite of TPN podcats from any one of Azures 400+ hotspots across Australia.
How does it work???
Well...they have two easy plans...
How cool is that??? People in the US might not appreciate that in Australia we don't really have that many places where we can get free WiFi..and we actually pay (ridiculous amounts of money) for our bandwidth in Australia...so $20 for 400 MB (20 x 20MB shows) of TPN goodness is a pretty good offer.
Its almost like we are broadcasting from 400+ locations across Australia...and when you put it that way... :)
Well well....seems that The Podcast Network has once again broken new ground in the podcastosphere...
Ewan Spence, who hosts The Rock Show (or TPN Rock as he likes to cal it), has had his other short run show nominated for a Scottish BAFTA...thats right...The Edinburgh Fringe Show is one of of the three nominees for this years "Best Interactive Media Award" which will be announced on the 13th of November.
How cool would that be...a TPN podcast winning a BAFTA :)
Well done Ewan...

MOTOROLA ANNOUNCES MARKETING AGREEMENT WITH THE PODCAST NETWORK
Motorola becomes first site-wide anchor tenant of The Podcast Network from October, 2005
Sydney, Australia 14 October 2005 Motorola Mobile Devices, a global leader in wireless communications, today announced that it has entered into a three-month strategic marketing partnership with The Podcast Network (TPN), the world?s first commercial podcast network.

Check out the actual press release here and don't forget to keep an eye out for all the banner ads and an ear out for the audio ads and top and tails...they are classics...
Oh yeah..this should explain why i was getting invited to all of the Motorola ROKR events for those of you that wondered :)
So not only did we announce that we got our new servers working...and that we have started The Father Bob Show...but we have also announced an advertising deal for The Media Center Show with Orb Networks.
But wait..there's more...we have one more big announcement that is due to happen at 9am tomorrow morning Sydney time...and this one is the result of months worth of work.
Stay tuned to the TPN blog for the big news :)
Stay tuned for some really exciting news this week as we kick this thing back into gear, and I know that all of our excellent hosts along with Cam and myself hope that you have enjoyed the great podcasts that we have been providing for your listening pleasure since February 2005…the ride has just started folks.
:)
Mick Stanic
Co-Founder, The Podcast Network
Walking around with a video camera strapped to your arm for four days ain't all that bad...here i am with the girls who were on the DK Blue stand. DK Blue make all the apparel and the "swagg" for Microsoft in Australia (staff only ordering i think)...and they were also responsible for the bright yellow media-casting shirts we had at Tech.Ed.
Yes, they did make us look like we worked for the local roads board or council but we did get some other free stuff out of them...like the Tech.Ed World Tour t-shirts which were a pretty cool idea ;)
"G'Day World is a great show for geeks with an Australian spin. Two belligerent Aussies interview trendsetting techies in a no-holds barred format. The big difference here is that the interviewers are actually smart and funny. Kind of like a Daily Show for nerds (with an accent). Learn all about Wikis, Skype and Australian beer. Not your average morning zoo here."
Seriously though...well done to the team at Podcast Alley.
The Podcast Network (TPN) crew and myself shot well over 20 hours of footage over the four days and though we have put up a lot of material already over on the Tech.Ed mediacasting page, a lot more is still to some. I have enough material to continue editing for another few days so expect more content soon...and if you want to subscribe to a feed...head on over to The MS DEV Show site at TPN and grab our one. What better way to keep in touch with the going-ons in the world of MS dev :)
The term "Podcast" has been added into the Oxford Dictionary of English
"There is little that gets Valley girls and boys as hot and bothered as when an Internet company gets funded by both Sequoia Capital and Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers. So it’s worth noting that the iconic venture shops have participated in an $8.85 million Series A round for PodShow Inc., according to a regulatory filing. For an added bonus, both John Doerr and Ray Lane have taken board seats, joining both Jerry Newman of Bear Stearns and omnipresent angel investor Ram Shriram (Google, Plaxo, Zazzle, etc.), who is representing shareholder Harris MyCFO Inc." - Private Equity Week Wire
:)
If you are in Australia...and you are a developer who uses Microsoft products...you should be going to Microsofts annual developer conference, Tech.Ed 2005, which is being held on the Gold Coast at the end of August...and if you wanted to get a taste for what was going on at the Australian Tech.Ed this year, how would you do it??? Well...you would not have to go any further than the Tech.Ed Media-casting (RSS feed coming soon) site would you...
During the lead up to Tech.Ed 2005, you will be able to watch (thats right...they have video) and listen (and audio) to Microsoft Australia staff and a selection of session presenters (mostly MVP's) talk about why you should attend this once a year opportunity. All of this material will be available on the Tech.Ed 2005 media-casting site.
During Tech.Ed, you will also be able to get (almost) live audio and video updates straight from the event from a number of blogs run by MS Australia staff...including Frank Arrigo, Charles Sterling and Michael Kleef. We will also set up a category over on The MS DEV Show site with all the Tech.Ed 2005 material as well.
And who is producing this excellant material i hear you ask...well...it would be none other than Mick (thats me) and my TPN co-founder, Cam...thats right, the people behind your favourite podcast network (which is TPN of course...right??).
So go and check it out...it looks like it will not only be the biggest media-cast ever done by Microsoft in Australia, but i think it would be fair to say that it could turn out to be one of the biggest media-casts of an event done in the world...full-stop (next to Mike Halls excellent Tech.Ed and MEC podcasts from the US this year).

Note: OK...i know...it doesn't have an RSS feed so it really isn' a podcast..but its the thought that counts on this one :)
This Friday (the 12th of August), I am presenting a session at the D>Art.05 Forum at the Museum of Sydney, on the models surrounding podcasting from the "consumer", "corporate" and "art" perspective.
Some of the other speakers on the day sound fascinating and i hear that the event may even be podcast...so there is no need to fly in from overseas or anything like that to hear me give my talk ;)
The D&rt;Art.05 Forum is part of Australia's premiere annual digital art event, D>Art.05, that is put on each year by dLux media|arts. As part of the event, the "free" D>Art.05 Exhibition (sound, web, and art for mobile devices), has its official opening tonight at the Sydney Opera House Exhibition Hall and then opens up to the public between August 10 and September 4.
OK..it probably helps that we interviewed him the other day for our G'day World podcast :)
Here are two links to stories from MarketWatch..one on podcasting and advertising and the other one on podcast distribution and the iTunes effect (bottom of page)
I just think its weird and hard to get used to the fact that people are referring to us as just "Mick and Cam" :)
These podcasts, media-casts or "TechNet Briefings Audio Presentations" as they are calling them, are essentially recordings of Microsoft TechNet presentations and events being delivered over RSS...which is exactly what "podcasting" is...podcasing isn't a genre...podcasting is a technology...
He wants to interview quite a few of the founding fathers including Dave Winer and Adam Curry, and I am sure some where along the way he will get to the really important people..like...those guys that started The Podcast Network ;)
Best of luck with it Richard...i'll buy a copy... :)
I wonder if they will head of down the same path as Microsoft eventually and do a video based site like Channel 9???
Over at The Podcast Network, we are registering a large number of requests from the iTunes client, and our feeds inside iTunes are pointing to the xml files hosted on our server....hmmmm...and of course...no comments from Apple yet....
I ran across this becaus i am still trying to work out why some of the podcasts listed in iTunes have album art, but most don't..including all of our shows from The Podcast Network...well ok...i have only tagged up G'day World (G'day World TPN site and G'day World iTunes site) before i go and do all the others...anyone???
This is not too great a problem for most podcast creators, since they do generally only have one podcast to worry about...but...when you are in my shoes, and are looking after 29 (at last count) podcasts, RSS feeds and blogs over at The Podcast Network, that have to follow a structure and need to ensure consistency for everybody, including hosts, directories and listeners..its a whole differenet experience. Short of creating an iTunes specific feed...which i think is a silly thing to do...i suppose its back to iTunes RSS purgotory for me. :(
Now, i don't currently use iTunes as my main music player, aggregator or iPod syncing tool (and don't plan to use it in the future for various reasons)...but I do love the structure of the new iTunes when it comes to making it easy for the general public to access podcasts. The biggest issue I have (other than by tagging one) is the inability to add OPML feeds or to even at the most basic sense, export your iTunes podcast playlist so that you can use it in another aggregator.
Can anyone say lock-in???
Robin over at Podnova, has put up a blog post up that explains some of the issues really well...or you could always go and listen to what Dave Winer has to say and who he links to about the issue as well... :)
Still...well done Apple...on most fronts.
Please put your hands together for Raj Deut and Jonathan Wrigley, the co-hosts of...The Mac User Show.
Welcome aboard guys..great to finally have this show launch :)
Today we launched our 28th channel...Employment Acceleration.
On the 17th of June, we launched The Golf Show.
And on the 16th of June we launched Matt, Freak & The Fatboy and The MixTape Show.
We hope you enjoy the new content...and welcome aboard to all of the new hosts.
Way to go Ian... :)
From Ian over at The Media Center Show site:
*******************************************
It’s an addin for Window Media Center that enables you to listen to any of the Podcast Network shows (including The Media Center Show of course) on your Media Center PC with the remote.
All you have to do is download the very small installer (http://iandixon.co.uk/rss/tpn.zip) extract the two files and run the install.bat file.
Then a shortcut to The Podcast Network will be created under More Programs and the Radio section on Media Center. You can then use the remote to navigate round the TPN site and stream the Podcasts straight to your Media Center PC
It’s in Beta at the moment so if you find any problems or have any suggestions please go to the support forum at http://iandixon.co.uk/CS/forums/18/ShowForum.aspx
The site is powered by mNewsCenter which as a RSS reader and Podcast listener for Windows Media Center which you install on your MCE PC and you can customize it to use what ever RSS feed you like (a demo is available for download from Embedded Automation)
Today The Podcast Network and I have launched a beta version of the Podcast Network on Media Center.
Welcome aboard Sheri and SuZan...
* You will notice that we are getting really good at coming up wth new and wacky names ;)
From the site:
Podcasting is the latest in on-the-go, on-demand technology bringing the people of California closer in touch with their Governor. With podcasting, you can listen to the Governor's radio programs whenever and wherever you choose.
Oh yeah...(insert favourite Terminator quote here)....
Hosted by Molly Carlile, Dead Serious is a program about death, grief, loss and life. All topics that most of us don't want to talk about...well...now you can listen to a podcast about them.
Welcome aboard Molly...
Apple said this...Microsoft said that...and even "the haircut"...i mean Adam Curry is getting involved with his comments in the latest Gillmor Gang show...
Adam Curry: "It was like 15 minutes after it (podcast support in iTunes) showed up in the Wall Street Journal when Microsoft called, saying, 'Hey, how do we get in this?' I don't know a lot about Microsoft. I do see they're a lot hungrier company than they used to be. But every single time you talk to them about anything that's new, or in this case iPodder functionality inside Windows Media Player, the almost standard answer is, 'Yeah we're going to have a lot of that in Longhorn.' That to me means there is this huge steamboat that is very difficult to steer left or right, and it's just harder to get stuff done at Microsoft."
Cam seems to have been partly responsible as well...Robert posted onto his blog about our trying to find out how to get TPN into the upcoming iTunes podcasing list...and it got picked up by a few people along the way.
No word from Apple yet, though one of Scobles comments was interesting; "I don't know anyone on Apple's iTunes team, but I will pass this to our podcasting team. Oh, am I even allowed to admit that we have a podcasting team? Heh, the secret is out."
All i can say is...hang on...damn...I can't say anything ;)
Hosted by W. Wayne Turmel it about...well...the show name says it all realy doesn't it.
Welcome aboard Wayne (aka. dub dub)...great to have you as part of the TPN family. :)
Its hosted by Jon Watson, the man who brought the world one of the first Linux podcasts, "Tales from the Motherboard", and it's first show should be ready later this week so you may as well head over and subscribe to it so you don't miss out.
Welcome to the TPN family Jon.
The best quote's...
"A high-bandwidth donnybrook has exploded onto the Internet, as two successful entrepreneurs are waging a hissy war over who deserves the credit for podcasting...”
and
"In one corner: high-tech legend Dave “The Geek” Winer, who claims to have launched the first podcasts in 2003 when he was a fellow at Harvard Law School’s Berkman Center for the Internet & Society. Across the ring: Adam “Pretty Boy” Curry, a former MTV music presenter, tabloid celebrity in Holland (don’t ask), supercool helicopter pilot, and promoter extraordinaire,"
C'mon Adam and Dave...can't we all just learn to get along ;)
No more...the new site (an interim version, but i'm not sure when it will change again) has finally gone live...and yes...i know it has a few little bugs and i'm fixing them as quick as i can ;)
More importantly...we hope you like our new logo....we think it rocks :)
Brought to you by Ian Dixon and Jonathon Lyman...way to go guys...keep up the good work.
In the first show, TPN co-founder, Cameron Reilly talks to Dr Sandy McKinnon from Pentech Ventures in Scotland.
The Health Show and The Animal World Show
Go along to the sites and download the shows to check them out...even better...subscribe and get all the goodness delivered straight to your aggregator...enjoy :)
I only have one thing to say really..."THIS IS NOT PODCASTING!!!".
Well OK...i couldn't stop at just that...
The Infinity run KYCY-AM 1550 station in San Francisco is not podcasting either...hello...people...playing back a podcast on radio ..is called guess what?? Thats right...radio. And it makes no difference if its delivered via satellite...thats just a delivery medium...unless you start giving people the ability to time shift it.
The material that a few "well meaning / scared shitless" radio stations are putting out and calling podcasting...is also not podcasting. Taking the morning segment from a a radio broadcast and sticking it in an RSS feed (which half of them forget to do anyway)..is called playing back crappy radio over the web...and whats worse, it comes complete with local news and stories that are dated by midday anyway.
I've been going around saying to all the press that are interviewing us about TPN at the moment that radio is not dying and no, podcasting is not going to kill it...radio is just changing. Well maybe i'm wrong...maybe it is dying. Check out this story about how radio is just not performing in the eyes of the people who fund it. Add to that a recent report by media buying company ZenithOptimedia, that with £552m being spent on online based advertising in the UK in 2004, it has recently overtaken the spend allocated to radio.
Can all those media headlines actually be right??? Is podcasting killing the radio star??? Maybe Howard Stern should have signed up with TPN instead of Sirius??? (for a lot less money of course)
You can now grab a "podcast" of one of the Star Trek Enterprise episodes, "In a Mirror, Darkly", and listen along as you are watching the show. Its a shame the studio has cancelled the series...grrrr...
I initially noticed this from a posting by Alex Williams over at Corante.
Tomorrow morning, somewhere around 7.20am, i'll be spending 5 minutes being interviewed on live TV about the joys of podcasting and The Podcast Network.
It will be our first piece of TV coverage so the Media Center will be set to record and hopefully i will have a copy of it up online later in the day. :)
Listen in as we provide weekly coverage direct from the US with Adam and Steve about the NCAA tournament, the teams and the players that you all love.
Because if you do, "The Microsoft Developer Show" (or "The MS Dev Show" as we like to call it) over at The Podcast Network is for you.
Tune in as your host Dr Pete not only talks about .Net, Microsoft and other cool technologies, but as he also chats to some great people along the way. Hey...anyone know how to get BillG on the show??? ;)
If your a fan of aussie rules footy, then this show is a must...and if you don't know a thing about the sport, then tune and learn from Pete and his team of friends as they present this weekly round-up of the hottest news and going-ons from the land downunder.
And grab a meat pie with sauce while your at it :)
But please..someone tell them that this not a podcast...where is the RSS feed??? I think we can now say that the word "podcast" is now officialy a "buzzword".
Its worth listening to though.. :)
The latest show to join our ever expanding stable of content is one that i have been looking forward to for a while (as i'm an avid user of the technology)...is the "The Media Center Show".
Ian Dixon, the host for "The Media Center Show", has already produced two shows about the Windows Media Center before joining us and he has kindly allowed us to put those shows up on the site while he is getting the third show together. Thnx Ian..and welcome onboard.
The show has already gotten favourable reviews and we hope you all enjoy it...
And make sure you turn your iPod's volume upto eleven...its that good...
Listen in while Ewan interviews Tim O'Reilly, Cory Doctorow, Robert Kaye, Mauel Kiessling, Phillip Torrone, James Larsson, Mike Rowehl andf Rael Dornfest.
I really wanted to get to this years Etech as i attended the 2004 conference and it was brilliant..but alas, various things kept me from going...so when Ewan said he was going, he just knew he had to record some interviews with some of the great people who showed up...more ETech shows are coming up so make sure you subscribe to the feed...
Oh yeah..great job Ewan..and Crow of course :)
If you like attending tech conferences...but just can't seem to get them, check out our latest channel...The Tech Conference Show. We are not pretending that we will get to every tech show that is put on every where in the world, but the ones that we do go to and that we record shows at, we will post at this new site. We will also cross post any conference based recordings from other channels that fit into this category as well.
The Movie Show...starring Cameron Reilly and Ewan Spence. These two movie fanatics will be giving us a weekly look at the movies of the past, the present and the future...so grab some popcorn, subscribe to the feed and get your movie fix at The Podcast Network.
One of the benfits of doing post production to the shows is that i get to listen to them before anyone else...and let me tell you...if you own a Tablet PC, or are thinking of buying a Tablet PC, then i highly recommend that you go and listen to the new show...
Ummm..guys....an mp3 or WMA on your website does not make a podcast...or did i miss the RSS feed somewhere????
(Note: From the XBOX 2 press release...right near the bottom of it)

PS. More new shows on the way ;)
A total of 96 shows were produced by Andrew Dubber (who will be hosting one of our music shows for us) and Belinda Todd. It premiered on New Zealand radio in 1998 (1999 perhaps?), was made with the help of New Zealand On Air and also won an award as the Best Dramatic Production at the 1999 New Zealand Radio Awards.
Andrew Dubber has given us kind permission to syndicate the show at The Podcast Network, and I hope you really enjoy what is probably the first serialised radio drama podcast on the internet.
This is a really cool podcast and a fascinating concept...hopefully it will be the first of many "radio drama's" that we present.
This whole network thing is turning out pretty cool and its a whole lotta fun... :)
PS. Its a whole lotta work as well....
Not only can you get to read a two page spread about podcasting in Australia's premier businesss magazine, but you also get to feast your eyes on a photo of me out on the street at my local shopping area, with my laptop...a set of studio headphones and a serious studio microphone. They figured that would look better than a photo of me at home with my $50 Altes Lansing headset with built in boom mic...I should try and organise the next photo shoot in a proper recording studio just for the hell of it :)
Soooo..if your interested...here is the article on the ninemsn Buletin site (minus the photo)...and here is a PDF (2MB) of the article as well.
Well..its finally happenend....its just gone 5am on the morning of the 14th of February 2005 on the east coast of Australia, and i have thrown the switch to start The Podcast Network.
Four sites are now live and open to the public...
The Podcast Network Blog
This is the network blog that will keep you all up to date on what is happening at TPN (The Podcast Network). Keep an eye on it for network updates, new shows releases and announcements of new hosts.
G'day World
G'day World is moving over to join the network...check out its new home.
The Gadget Show
The Gadget Show is hosted by Richard Giles and will become THE place to find out about the latest going-ons in gadget land.
The Mobiles Show
The Mobiles Show is hosted by Ewan Spence and the "All About" team and will cover developments in the mobile phone space from both the developers and the users perspectives.
So there you have it...go and check them out...more shows are on the way...and i'll have some news on other hosts in the next couple of days.
Let The Podcast Network revolution begin... :)
I have spent a lot of time configuring the server and playing with nightly builds of WordPress and i'm pretty sure i've had Photoshop open more in the last week than i have in the last 6 months...oh well....nearly ready :)
Don't take this the wrong way, but you should hit your head on the toilet bowl more often ;)
What is cool, is that we haven't even got the press release out and we are already being picked up the media....check out this CBS Market Watch short report on our little plan... :)
The web site is live over at www.thepodcastnetwork.com...but what is it???
"The Podcast Network will be the best collection of podcast's available anywhere that are managed and aggregated under the one roof."
