Sydney in 1971

Posted by Mick (SplaTT) Stanic under: Sydney; Videos .

Google have launched the Australian version of Google Video and i just watched an amazing film shot in 1971 from the Film Australia Archives.

The video, called “Ticket to Sydney”, goes for about 9 minutes and features all of the transport systems used in Sydney at the time. There are some great shots of old ferries, hydrofoils, cars using the Harbour Bridge, trains and buses.

Some of the footage is just amazing and inculdes:

  • double decker buses
  • people smoking on trains
  • some really old ferries
  • traffic workers picking up lane dividers from the back of moving trucks on the harbour bridge…wait till you see this bit…i can’t believe they used to do this…
  • one of those cars that turns into a boat
  • a hippie with a briefcase paddling his canoe across the harbour
  • shots of the opera house still under contruction
  • shots of the Sydney skyline minus all the tall buldings built int eh last 30 odd years…it looks so different from today
  • some brilliant shots of full carparks
  • and to top it off…i have never seen so many mini-skirts in my life :)

Congrats to Film Australia Archives and to the team at Google that did the deal to get this stuff up the web…its just a shame that you can’t grab the video and embed it into your own page :(
