Gucci dumps flash
Posted by Mick (SplaTT) Stanic under: Art / Design; The Web / Links .
Check out the new Gucci website which has dumped flash (they only use it for the video’s) in favour of some really great CSS and AJAX based design.
Very well done.

I still don’t get what the big deal is with AJAX. I don’t find that Gucci site to be anything spectacular. Particularly the horizontal scrollbar. That’s awkward. I think they could have done a much better job flash based.

The designers would no doubt have a had a field day doing the Gucci site in flash, but the clever use of AJAX and CSS just means that the site “should” load a bit quicker and provide a consistent experience no matter how the person views the site. Its certainly makes the update process quicker and simpler if the coding has been done correctly in the first place…and being able to seperate the functionality from the display during production means the build process was probably more transperant and easier to change if required…thats the theory at least :)
