Segway in Sydney

Posted by Mick (SplaTT) Stanic under: Geek Toys .

It looks like Segway opened up shop (well…not literally) in Sydney recently…i’ll need to check with Segway Sydney and see if the have any info on the future availability of the Segway XT in Australia.

:)

Note: If you haven’t actually seen a real Segway and you are in Sydney, go down to the QANTAS domestic terminal in Sydney and they have them in the gadget store in the actual lounge area once you have gone through security.

The lift doors opened on the ground floor at work the other day and some turkey rode a Segway out of the lift, naturally expecting some kind of ‘Oh wow…’ response from whoever was there. Naturally I just ignored him.

No, but I’d like to. We had one at an event we did once, and the journo’s and everyone around were just going mental and riding it. Didn’t take long for people to balance on them no-hands.

I saw someone driving one of these down a footpath in the city day - the moron was making people fly out of the way left right and centre so he could scoot his way around without walking like the rest of us…

I reckon these things probably fall under the same category as scooters - you’re not supposed to legally drive them on footpaths because (like bicycles) they’re a hazard to pedestrians, but you certainly can’t ride them on a road, so more or less its only legal to ride the stupid things around the house or up and down the driveway…

And in any case, the dumb appearance far outways any cool factor :P Well… In my opinion anyway :)

There is definitely going to be a certain amount of negative opinion about them to start off with. However it really does take people with the foresight and vision to see inventions like these create inovations that change the world we live in.
I’m not heralding them as the next craze to sweep the world, quite the opposite, however they are definitely a step in the right direction.
Quiet, fast, clean, emission free personal transport, isn’t that where we are supposed to be heading?

Ever watched a movie and wondered when those hover cars were really ever going to get here, well the Segway could just be the brother of a long line of inovations heading towards flying to work…
that’s my thoughts anyway.
And yes I’ve riden one, you can walk, I’ll Segway thankyou very much.
